Contract Won - Trinity Church, Haddenham - Mar 12

23 APRIL 2012

CEL Limited have secured a contract to repair and replace sand cast lead that has been recently stolen from Holy Trinity Church.   The repairs will take place to the north aisle and transept.

It has been recently reported that Ecclesiastical, the main Church of England insurer, received 2,500 claims in 2011, which is a huge increase from previous years.

And it’s not just churches, it was also reported that more than 200 crimes a day are being committed against Britain’s historic sites including churches,  grade 1 and 2 listed buildings, monuments, burial mounds, historic parks and gardens.

To tackle this, some churches are adopting radical measures.  After a church was reportedly hit seven times by thieves in one year, they chose to replace the whole of the lead roof with fiberglass.

We ourselves are currently in the process of developing a new sympathetic alternative to the traditional lead roofing used on many of our heritage buildings and have already seen an upturn in churches turning to roofing alternatives like zinc and stainless steel in an attempt to discourage thieves from returning.

It is great to see that in this case, Trinity Church, Haddenham will be keeping with the traditional sand cast lead.

They have also gone to great lengths to make ensure  that no thefts take place while the works are taking place by installing an extensive alarm system to the building and roof.

We cannot recommend this enough and would love to see more Churches taking the same measures of prevention.

A case study of this church will appear in our Completed Restoration Projects in due course, please check back shortly
